Example text

When animals are captured or transported, for example, this does not always affect their physical health in overt ways. However, this may well be because there is no time for serious health defects to make themselves shown. The animal may soon be released or the journey may soon be over. One reason for supposing that, given time, the animal's health would be affected is that it is often possible to detect physiological disturbances such as changed hormone levels which, as we will discuss more fully in Chapter 5, may be the precursors of ill-health.

They can be used as a kind of warning system: 'Here is an area which needs looking at'. The restricted locomotion of animals, particularly very active ones, in small cages, would be an example of this. But, even studies which showed up major discrepancies between wild and confined animals would be a starting point only. For evidence that the differences were actually causing the animals to suffer, we have to look elsewhere. 5 The physz"ology of suJferz"ng So far, we have seen that physical health is a valuable guide to an animal's well-being but that differences between wild and domestic animals do not in themselves provide an adequate criterion of suffering.

In this chapter we will look at one source of that other evidence: the physiological state of the animal. The first problem here is to decide what to measure, that is, which physiological variables give the best indications of suffering. As we shall see, physiologists have most commonly dealt with this problem using the concept of 'stress'. It might be thought that 'stress' and 'suffering' were one and the same thing. But it will become apparent that there are important differences between them.
