The dead came from far afield, from Mesopotamia, the Hejaz and the Caucasus. Yet they fought together as one people to protect the thing that was central to them all: their homeland. The French cemetery and Memorial at Helles. The five ossuaries are located beneath the central obelisk. (April 1998) Beneath the terraces of the Memorial there is a small but effective museum of battlefield relics. The plain glass cases contain numerous rusting souvenirs of the conflict, some large like the mule saddle for carrying ammunition and others small such as the used and unused cartridge cases.
On the right of the old picture, taken after the area had become the main French base, can be seen the River Clyde connected to the shore by a long, curving pier. Inland, on the centre of the horizon, is the outline of the Old Fort and on the left, beyond the ruins of the village, the crest of Hill 141. Today this hill is marked by the two trees that stand above the grave of Lieutenant Colonel Doughty-Wylie VC. Directly opposite, on the water’s edge, the disappearing remains of the River Clyde’s main pier can be seen in front of the Mocamp motel.
Above the centre of the beach stand the cemetery and the new Mocamp motel. (August 1988) In ignorance of this devastation, the Royal Munster Fusiliers waited inside the River Clyde to undertake their part in the ordeal. As part of an attempt to land a second battalion on the same beach within minutes the River Clyde, an old collier, had been fitted out to be run aground with a hidden cargo of 2000 men ready to storm out onto V Beach through four large sallyports cut along each side of the ship.
